To The Black Women Who Defend Barack Obama (or Any Black Male)

Shellacking

November 2nd was a shocker wasn’t it? Wow, that was some election. Where did all the progressives and liberals go? Are they only in California, Connecticut, Delaware, and New York?

President Obama

I know a lot of you think that the sole and most important reason for the Republican and Tea Party takeover of the House of Representatives and gain of several seats in the Senate was due to racism.

It could be. It could be. I wouldn’t rule out that as a reason for some portion of the political shift.

Superman vs. Below Average

I think you also have to realize that the rest of the US population isn’t interested in “helping a brotha out”, or “giving him a chance, because it’s only been two years”, or “hey, we’d be worse off if he didn’t do X, Y, and Z!” The thing is, folks expected him to perform – way way above par. He was expected to be exceptional. Never take that for granted. Especially in your own lives – on the job or when put in charge of something. Excuses as to why he’s not fulfilling his obligations will fall on deaf ears.

I know, I know – according to most of y’all – 90% – he is exceptional. However, that’s never good enuff. 😀

What do I mean? Well, black women are used to under performing, inadequate, insufficient, dysfunctional, and irresponsible black males who, at times, do have legitimate problems. Most black women are always ready and willing to make excuses, overcompensate for  poor performance, provide excessive moral support, and see every insult or humiliation a black male endures as your own. There’s always some reason, some long winded excuse as to why he cannot be, in any reasonable fashion, like the other men in this country or even in this world. You think people might care that his problems are exceptional.

Unfortunately, the rest of the US population (if not the world) really and truly doesn’t give a damn. Their expectations are different: they don’t use a sympathy or pity curve when it comes to black males.

Yardstick: The Black Man’s Will Be Longer

See, this President will be measured by the same yardstick used on the other Presidents. In this case it seems unfair, because all the other guys are white. Even Clinton had a tough time, although he did get to use his “black male card” to explain his adulterous, lascivious, amoral, and duplicitous nature.

Can you see my point now? Your black man, in a position of responsibility, will be judged by the same, if not, much much more difficult, rigid, yet longer, yardstick than the others. Even if there is a tinge of racism in their complaints, at the end of the day, folks only care about: Did he deliver? Did he exceed those agreed upon goals? Are we pleased with his performance? Did I get what I wanted out of this?

That last sentence is key: everyone understands the notion of reciprocity, quid pro quo, “what am I getting for my support?” and “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch your back”, except black women. Black women are used to giving something and getting nothing in return.* No one else follows that philosophy.

So, if they continue to think he hasn’t performed, is giving his all, or exceeding expectations, then the first black President will serve only one term. Right now, he’s practically a lame duck, unless he figures out how to manage his opponents.

Frankly, I don’t see that happening.

*A few things to ponder:

  • Black women gave the President the highest percentage of votes for their demographic.
  • Was a black woman nominated for the Supreme Court? *crickets*
  • Who was the first person he tossed under the bus? Mrs Susan Rice.
  • Who was the most recent person he tossed under the bus? Mrs Shirley Sherrod.
  • Were there any black female candidates he went out of his way to support? *crickets*
  • That’s right, we cannot have any complaints, because we’re supposed to be simply grateful we got a black man as President. Which gets us exactly what?

Alrighty then.

Native Americans: Obama’s Been Doing Right By Them

Every group has their demands….

**  More Stuff **

The Reverberations:

NYTimes.com: Texas Considers Medicaid Withdrawal … As a result of federal health care changes, some Republican lawmakers are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program.

Isn’t there a poker game called Texas Hold’em?

It just doesn’t stop:

This article is downright offensive. It’s from the Washington post:

Federal government needs a chief operating officer says a former democratic Senator, Bob Kerrey. The COO’s duties would lie in execution of government policy, including ensuring that the government is well managed and that it addresses key national priorities as one entity and not as hundreds of separate agencies operating in silos.

What are qualifications for this position? The COO should have significant business experience as well as sensitivity to the mechanics of government. That experience would serve him or her well in managing the government’s vast moving parts.

Isn’t that what the President and Vice President are supposed to be doing? Is this article saying that the current President isn’t competent?

Rant: To People Who Compare Every Politically Incorrect Expression or Treatment to "the Blacks"

Stop it right now.

Stop those trite, irritating, and annoying expressions of “Well, it is like doing X against the blacks,” or “Well, it is like using the N-word to describe group Y,” or the all time favorite, “Group Z going through this discrimination is like doing this to the blacks.”

For real though, those declarations do not make any sense at all. If the offense is that serious, then the blacks do not need to be dragged into the discussion.

The history of black people(s) in the diaspora is not short, simple, and it is not a convenient, slick, back of the envelope example of discrimination and suffering for other groups to use.

We are not a trick bag of goodies for others to use and (mis)appropriate when convenient.

Some folks may not mind, but I do. My suggestion: Use your own damn history. Compile and relate your own pertinent examples of discrimination, suffering, and intolerance. People will understand. People will respect you for it. People will be able to picture your complaints and take them seriously.

Right now, whenever I hear “the blacks“, whatever support I may have had for your position(s) gets negated to zip, zero, and zilch. It drops down into “I could not care less” category.

It Is Not Logical

Using “the blacks” to exemplify discrimination will not work, because it is not a correct logical construct to compare it to using the word “retarded”, being a woman, blind, deaf, dumb, alcoholic, mentally disabled, physically disabled, a drug addict, a fat ugly white woman, a senior citizen, a homosexual, lesbian, or whatever group feels they have a problem.

You know why the comparisons do not make any sense? Aside from the coalition of fat ugly white women, black people are also women, senior citizens, mentally disabled, blind, deaf dumb, etc.

Default Normalcy

Saying “the blacks” is deliberately erasing our complexity and humanity. When the slaves were emancipated, and freedmen got the vote, only black men could vote (in theory, since Jim Crow closed that door). Yet, all the time, I see idiots, especially in the media, saying “the blacks” got the vote when slavery ended. Black women could not vote until all women, excepting Native Americans at the time, were granted suffrage.

Some of you assume everyone’s default for man is a white man. Some of you assume everyone’s default for woman is a white woman. This thinking is about seeing whiteness as normal, and blackness as abnormal. It is so automatic, no one stops to think why they do it. It makes as much sense as this sentence: women and minorities. Translation: white women and others. Are minorities not women too?

That is why some of you folks love to associate every group that might be outcast, abnormal, dysfunctional, disrespected, or whatever as “the blacks.”

Get it clear, not all of us has a world view where we are a minority, secondary, subordinate, a permanent victim group, or inferior to anyone

So, shut up already.

Next time you find yourself in a search of a short hand narrative, leave “the blacks” out of it.

Put the trick bag of missappropriating black people’s culture, history, gender, and identity down. Go free ride on the back of some other group.

The Shameless Society

I’m not a Bible thumper. I’m not religious. I don’t believe in end-times, or anything like that. I see myself as moderate, perhaps a tad conservative. I’m not a “liberal” or “progressive.” Although those terms often seem to mean: I do not think. Rules are lame. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, society – everyone – has no say over me.

We live in a permissive, shameless, and immoral society. There is a massive group for whom delayed gratification does not exist. If it feels good, Do it! Damn the consequences. That’s the motto. I’m not convinced there ever was a season of restraint amongst the peoples of this country, but now, I believe, we are completely boundless. Is technology and the ease with which spreading and making depavity fun to blame?

Whaaaa, Don’t Judge Me

There are people who like to get out their favorite quote, which says: “Don’t judge, lest you be judged.” Online, no group seems to find this comment more empowering than black people. It’s the default response to hearing / reading criticism(s) they don’t like. I get it. I don’t like anyone telling me what to do either.

However, if you don’t want commentary, a rebuke, or a wagging finger of shame – don’t invite it.

Conservative? Really? Get Out!

There seems to be a consensus on some blogs that the majority of black people are “conservative.” I have yet to see any evidence of it. Attending church and voting against gay nuptials do not count. I don’t know how much I agree with Bill Cosby. The “black community”, while succeeding incredibly on some fronts, is tumbling down a flight of stairs, about to jackknife into the cellar, and then roll six feet into the ground – failing! – in other areas.

The evidence walks the streets in neighborhoods broken and decimated over the last 30-40 years. Single motherhood, single fatherhood, out of wedlock births, foster care, drug abuse, generations in prisons, dysfunctional schools, and fractured families have done their damage to the “black community.” A civilization (not that I am certain that the USA is one, but it is part of the Western World) cannot survive with broken families. This kind of social breakdown will lead to more chaos, not less.

Marriage Is Not For Selfish People

I don’t think marriage is the end all, be all. I agree with people who say they aren’t made for marriage. However, when people bring children into this world, they refuse to show maturity by not getting married. You are selfish. Children are not pets. How is being a baby-mama or baby-daddy good for a child?

This is the sorry age we live in: me first. Do you even know what a family is? What a legacy is? What passing on traditions mean? Do you realize you have to give back to society as well? Do you realize your offspring, you, and your mate, are part of the building blocks of this civilization?

Some Lifestyle Choices Are Damaging

The decline of the black family is like a thread unraveling the fabric of a sweater called civilized society. It starts with “our” community, but it will hit the mainstream eventually. But no one is worried! Hey, let the good times roll. Why? Because it’s a progressive and liberal lifestyle choice! Do what you feel, no one has a right to comment on it.

So, if black people really were “conservative” a whopping 70% of children would be born to married couples, with fathers around to raise them. Alas, they are not. Conservative minded individuals delay gratification, spend more time in school, and get themselves together before procreating. The principle is to be steady, stable, and secure before having people dependent on one. A strong family also makes it easy to have children early and in less than ideal conditions.

You Have My Pity

The way I look at it, if you tell the entire world that you are proud to have children without marriage, don’t be surprised at the responses. I pity the people involved, especially the women who believe the men are “committed” to them and the children of these relationships. Adulthood brings responsibility, things that cramp one’s style. It can be joyless and boring.

I’m the first to admit I would love to postpone adulthood, and continue acting like an adolescent indefinitely. People need to stop pretending, begin to act like adults, and get with the program. You are part of a civilized society, only barbarians and pirates get to do whatever they want.
